Starts in Luang Prabang with TukTuk transportation from the hotel or selected pick up point. You will arrive at the organic farm where you meet the local farming guide. You are invited to interact and experience each step of the rice harvest and will see how different tools are created. All the steps are explained and demonstrated by the charming local employees and your active involvement will make for a fun and educational experience .
In a small group you’ll get to grips with the day to day processes of the farm, particularly those on the paddy fields, along with traditional methods and machines used to clean the rice, make sticky rice, rice noodles and sugar cane juice, among other things.
The tour’s motto is ‘when was the last time you did something for the first time?’ So, you will have the opportunity to plough the fields, plant the seeds and cut and collect the rice, while being introduced to the farm’s buffalos. You can be as hands on as you wish; we recommend wading through the mud to plant the seeds, its an interesting, informative not to mention fun experience.
Around lunch time, the tour ends with an opportunity to sit down and try a communal dish of the farm’s specialties – sticky rice with fiery chili dip, round puffed crackers, cookies spiced with anise and coconut, and an earthy, smooth rice wine. You will have a new appreciation for rice and admiration for the people of Lao who to this day continue to harvest rice without modern machinery. The farm is not far from the Khuang Si waterfalls so you can combine visits to create a full day tour.
