LUANG PRABANG | Rice Planting Experience
Overview Programme Inclusion Gallery Request
You can buy instant boxed rice either Uncle Ben's or some other corporate brand, microwave it for two minutes and it is ready to eat. But do you know what it takes to cultivate, harvest and prepare rice before it is ready to eat. It takes a lot more than two minutes in the microwave. This unique half-day activity invites you on an in depth and hands-on learning experience where you will participate in 14 steps of the rice cycle on the Living Lands community farm. Enjoy a guided walk through the organic vegetable farm and learn all manner of trades, from thatched-roof making and basketry to noodle production and extracting the juice from sugarcane. You will experience the life of a farmer and try your hand at various activities, including ploughing the rice fields with one of the resident buffalo.

TRAVEL NOTES
The tour is open to families with children over 6 and we think it is a great way to experience the traditional rural way of life, meet local people and have a very enjoyable time in the process.

Starts in Luang Prabang with TukTuk transportation from the hotel or selected pick up point. You will arrive at the organic farm where you meet the local farming guide. You are invited to interact and experience each step of the rice harvest and will see how different tools are created. All the steps are explained and demonstrated by the charming local employees and your active involvement will make for a fun and educational experience .

In a small group you’ll get to grips with the day to day processes of the farm, particularly those on the paddy fields, along with traditional methods and machines used to clean the rice, make sticky rice, rice noodles and sugar cane juice, among other things.

The tour’s motto is ‘when was the last time you did something for the first time?’ So, you will have the opportunity to plough the fields, plant the seeds and cut and collect the rice, while being introduced to the farm’s buffalos. You  can be as hands on as you wish; we recommend wading through the mud to plant the seeds, its an interesting, informative not to mention fun experience.

Around lunch time, the tour ends with an opportunity to sit down and try a communal dish of the farm’s specialties – sticky rice with fiery chili dip, round puffed crackers, cookies spiced with anise and coconut, and an earthy, smooth rice wine. You will have a new appreciation for rice and admiration for the people of Lao who to this day continue to harvest rice without modern machinery. The farm is not far from  the Khuang Si waterfalls so you  can combine visits to create a full day tour.

This is a sample itinerary so the cost really depends on the number of people in your group and time of travel. Please send us your enquiry for availabilities & the most up dated price.
