PHNOM PENH | Apsara Encounter
Overview Programme Inclusion Gallery Request
Cambodia has a wonderful culture of dancing that is steeped in mythology. We invite you to step back in time and learn about the history of the Apsara dance – and some basic steps yourself – in a very authentic and special experience in Phonm Penh. The tour to the Apsara school takes you behind the scenes, to where it all begins. With this visit, you will have the chance to discover the process of becoming an apsara dancer and why this art is recognized by Unesco. You will see the young performers being trained from an early age in this important art in Cambodian history. As you are shown around the school, you can see various classes at different levels as they train to become the next generation of Apsara performers. This is a once in a lifetime opportunity that we believe will give you a unique window into the country's cultural heritage.

Places to visit Apsara Arts Association

• We organize this tour in partnership with the Apsara Arts Association. This is a local NGO created by artists from the Royal University of Fine Arts to preserve classical and folkloric dance and teach the skills to Cambodian youth, especially orphans and children from less well off families.
• The schedule of this tour depends on the school timetable. Indeed, the dance training sessions are usually held in the morning from about 7.30am to 10.30am and in the afternoon from 2pm to 5pm everyday except Sundays and Public Holidays. So we will make the best arrangement so that you can attend the sessions on time.
• Photography is quite strictly controlled by the centre’s administrators, and permission must be sought. The centre relies on donations to fund their activities, so please remember to make a donation if you visit.

After a short transfer to the outskirt of Phnom Penh, we arrive at the Apsara school, situated in a charming wooden house. This is also the headquarters of Apsara Arts Association that provides free dance training for poor children from the age of four to late teens. Here, you are first invited to meet with the director of the NGO who will be more than happy to tell you how the association struggles to preserve this Wolrd Heritage art form. There are over 150 students enrolled with the NGO, plying their skills. Funding remains an ever-present obstacle for the association. Even if performances are held every Saturday night for the public but a lack of funds affects the ability to pay teachers and even to switch on the electricity. The center also houses twenty children who are orphans and in vulnerable circumstances and ensures they receive a place to live, eat, go to school and of course, learn to dance or play music.

After a brief introduction to the association’s activities, you can watch the children being taught all the characteristics of this classical dance whilst learning about the historical significance of the dance. There is then an opportunity to enjoy a two hour dance class. As the dance requires male involvement, both men and women alike are invited to participate. After a little physical exercise, you can enjoy a drink and some traditional Cambodian canapés with your teacher and the young students. Apsara dance does not require specific physical ability. This dance is centered on teaching positions and smooth movement: The ideal core muscle strengthening exercises! For this purpose, predict light clothing in which you feel at ease.
