Phan Thiet - Mui Ne Beach (3 days)
Overview Programme Inclusion Gallery Request
The town of Phan Thiet itself is a rather dull and dreary coastal fishing port with not much to see. The main reason to visit this area is for the fine beaches on the Mui Ne peninsula, which stretch for more than 16 kilometres. The birth of tourism to Phan Thiet is said to have occurred in 1995 when thousands flocked to Mui Ne, to get the best possible view of a total solar eclipse that occured in October of that year. Since then the region has seen a mass influx of new beach resorts which has seen it become the main coastal destination in South Vietnam. The landscape if dramatically different from the lush green regions just an hour to the north, as here the strong sea breezes and hot, dry, climate have combined to create endless miles of towering sand dunes in a multitude of colours. The micro climate in this region makes it one of the countries driest places and an ideal beach break away from the humidity and hustle and bustle of Saigon or the Mekong Delta. Kitesurfing Service
Mui Ne, located in the South of Vietnam, is quickly building a reputation as one of the best destinations for kitesurfing worldwide, especially for wave riders. It is blessed with the most consistent winds in all of SE Asia, which is side-onshore at most spots and accelerated by the sand dunes in the region, and it has the lowest rainfall in the country.  When kitesurfers talk about Mui Ne, they usually mean the Bay of Phan Thiet. This bay features 17km of wide sandy beach, with predominantly choppy water and several great beach breaks to be found along the coast, allowing for excellent wave riding and downwind kitesurfing. There are several flat water spots as well for beginners and freeriders, for example near the harbour wall at the edge of Phan Thiet. The main season for kitesurfing in South Vietnam is November to April, when wind speed is around 25 knots most of the time. Due to the venturi effect of the sand dunes, the wind can be accelerated to even 35 knots though at several spots! Small kites will therefor usually be the preferred choice. The first months of the season, November and December, are the best for big swell. After January, the higher waves are replaced by better odds for sunshine. Water temperature hover around 28°C (82°F) all year.
