Rabbit Island
Kep Beach (3 days)
Overview Programme Inclusion Gallery Request
Located on the coast of the Gulf of Thailand, close to the Vietnamese border, Kep is a sleepy beach resort that was once the Cambodian equivalent of the French Riviera, where the ex-pats of the 60’s and 70’s came to escape Phnom Penh and party in their exclusive colonial villas. The conflicts of the late 1970’s however put pay to this glitzy seaside playground and the area was left strewn with the shells of hundreds of decaying villas. As memories fade of the recent turmoil, Kep and its surrounding area has started to find its feet once more and looks set to become the enticing destination it once was. The villas are still in evidence today but are in a pitiful state of disrepair although with a little imagination you can easily imagine them at their peak.

WHEN TO TRAVEL
The months from November through February  are generally considered to be the best time of year to visit, with December and January offering the very best weather of the year across the country - comfortably warm days, clear skies, no rain, light breeze, cool evenings.

March – May : The dry season continues, the only precipitation being short 'mango showers' in the afternoons that slowly increase in frequency and intensity through these months. Though sometimes quite hot, the lack of rain still leaves this a good time of year to visit the temples or the beach.

June – August : The hot season continues but is fairly quickly moderated as the monsoon rains begin in May and June, cooling, if only a bit, the hot, humid air. Across most of the country, the monsoon rains are fairly predictable, usually occurring in the afternoon or at night.

September – October : The air doesn't really begin to cool much until October or November, but still, its cooler than the hottest months. In September the temperatures hover in the mid 30s and slowly drop through the following months. By October, the mid day temperatures are around 30. In September the rainy season is just passing its peak. The rains are still very regular and intense in September, but by October the frequency is usually dropping off considerably. By the end of October the rains are close to stopping completely, if they haven't already.

DAY 1 : PHNOM PENH / KEP (-/-/-)
From Phnom Penh Airport or hotel, you’ll be met by our representative and transferred to Kep town. Upon arrival, check in hotel and you have the whole afternoon at your leisure.

DAY 2 : KEP (B/-/-)
After breakfast, you have the whole day free. You can either enjoy the facilities inside the resort or choose a wide range of excursions as follows

Kep Jungle Trek | Duration : 4 hours
Go for a hike in the Kep National Park. See exotic birds, snakes, squirrels, monkeys, butterflies, wild dogs... Approx. 1.5hrs walk to the top and 2 – 3hours around the mountain. The gently sloping trail winds past a couple of old pagodas, though light jungles where you may spy monkeys or other wildlife, and provides many picturesque overlooks along the way. The trail is actually a small, dirt service road that rings the mountain in an 8km loop, part of the road in pretty good condition, some narrow and overgrown. Kampot and the Elephant Mountains can be seen in the distance from the northwest viewpoint, and the trail on the other side of the mountain provides some striking views across the valley to a pagoda on the next mountain and the beaches in the distance.

Rabbit Island Tour | Duration : 8 hours
Rabbit Island is a small tropical island located about 20-40 minutes south of Kep by local boat. The island is blessedly undeveloped and lacks most services except for some rustic bungalows and a couple of rudimentary beach shack restaurants. Secluded white sand beaches dot the edges of the island, backed by a hilly coconut palm interior. The surrounding waters are relatively clear and warm, offering some snorkeling opportunities around the rocks.  In the morning you will discover Kep's teeming crab market before you hop on a boat for a 30-minute ride to Rabbit Island (Koh Tonsai), where secluded white sandy beaches, coconut trees, and a variety of sea coral await you. You will be free to explore this wonderful tropical island and have a sea food lunch while there. You can trek along the island's trail, ocean kayak, enjoy a beach massage or just rest and relax in this paradise. At 3 pm you will take a boat back to the resort in Kep.

Bokor Mountain Tour | Duration :8 hours
Our one day to Bokor allows people to see the beautiful sites on Bokor Mountain and around and to learn about the history of this site. On this adventure trip they will be able to admire the beautiful views from the king’s residence that encompass the gulf of Siam, Vietnam, and panoramic views of Kampot. Following this, people can walk through the old French hill station; go for a walk to the tea farm. Then there is an opportunity to go for a cold relaxing swim in the crystal clear waterfalls. This fun packed day is drawn to a leisurely close with a relaxing sunset river cruise back to Kampot.

Pepper Plantation Tour | Duration : 4 hours
Pepper grows on peppercorn trees, yes?   The answer to that and all your other pepper related questions will be answered on our pepper farm tour. Learn how green, white, red and black pepper is harvested and cultivated. Green pepper is difficult, if not impossible to find in the west. It has an amazing flavor like nothing else and won’t be nearly as spicy as you expect. Kampot was once the world leader in pepper exports and in the mid 20th century no well to do French restaurant would be without Kampot pepper. It has a unique almost sweet flavor with no bitterness. It doesn’t pack the same sting as standard black peppercorns. This is a must do when in Cambodia. The Khmer Rouge destroyed all pepper farms in the 70’s, and only a decade ago pepper seedlings were found growing wildly in the area. With the help of NGO’s, Khmers have made their way back into successful pepper production with annual demand outstripping supply. Get in quick before all your trendy friends find out about cooking with Kampot pepper!
